" Before my time at Mane Gait I was uncomfortable being responsible for the supervision of a child with disabilities, and was unsure of how to successfully aid a child who may need special assistance . Through my time as a volunteer, I saw and participated in interactions with those battling a variety of physical and mental disabilities . I not only worked with children, but also adults, and was trained in the proper way to support and react to the rider on the horse. Through horseback riding, these children and adults developed physical strength and were better able to channel their emotions through the calm rhythm and spirit of the horse. It was rewarding to see the change in the mood and ability of a rider in just one short nine week session. One of the young adults that I had the pleasure of supporting began as a meek and terrified rider, and emerged as a more confident being as she got to know her horse and became more secure in her ability to balance and relax while on the horse. I developed a relationship with these riders and began to be more aware of how to assist them with what they needed at certain times throughout their rides. It was a great learning experience and will always serve as a reminder of how to treat a student who may need a different type of attention."
