" First United Methodist Church is where I began learning the skills needed to care for and support children in their education. Through summer camps and Sunday School I had the opportunity to work with children of all ages; building lasting relationships with them and their families. Working in the nursery truly built my confidence in teaching and made me more comfortable supporting young learners. I still cherish the relationships I have with the families of First United Methodist and I know that I have made just as much of an impression on those families and their children, as they have made on me. " Though the time I spent working at FBC San Marcos was short, I feel proud of what I accomplished while there. Upon entering employment in the nursery, I was greeted with a very lax management system. I was basically handed a group of 40+ children with the simple directions to monitor them during and after their choir rehearsals once a week. I was entrusted with such duties as distributing snacks to each child, monitoring outdoor play, and leading and supervising group activities; but was challenged with 40 children, ages five to twelve, running around aimlessly with no clear guidelines. I quickly established my own guidelines, and at the time of my departure a year and a half later, there was a clear system for when and how snacks were distributed, who was involved in which activities based on age group, and how to practice safety during outdoor activities. I was also a nursery worker on Sunday mornings where I cared for children ages two to four, but after getting to know the kids I was quickly asked to take over the responsibility of teaching Sunday School to replace the teacher that was currently residing over me. I was left with a simple curriculum which I further developed and implemented for my class of about ten two year olds. I once again developed my own system of management and was able to build deeper relationships with the children in my class as I watched them grow. Through my teaching I watched one child develop from not saying a single word, to answering questions regarding the curriculum, and I worked with several others to help them slowly become comfortable assimilating to the classroom environment away from their parents. My short time at FBC San Marcos provided a phenomenal and rewarding experience, and I enjoyed the impact I had on that community of children, parents and coworkers."
